'La La Land' Film Review

This review WILL contain spoilers, so if you haven’t seen the film yet, and are either planning to or want to, don’t read on. I think you’ll enjoy the film more if you’ve read no reviews and know quite little about it.

I saw La La Land a few days ago and after hearing from friends and the media about how great it was, I wanted to see whether all the hype was worth it, because – let’s face it – so many things get attention for about a week or so and then fade out and you never really hear of them again. But, oh my goodness ‘La La Land’ deserves every single damn one of its 14 Oscar Nominations.

The first scene was set when we see trails and trails of cars stuck in a monotonous traffic jam. One of the drivers decides not to simply let boredom get the hold of her, but to begin a song and dance number outside her car where she is joined by the many other drivers (and passengers) in what follows to be a beautifully choreographed and arranged scene. At first, I wasn’t sure whether I was going to enjoy the film, because although it was such an uplifting and happy scene, I was worried that it could be heavily populated with frequent song-and-dance numbers. Often in a film, these can appear quite unrelated to the storyline and are quite cheesy, which although I don’t mind, I don’t always love either. However, in ‘La La Land’ these scenes were executed brilliantly and fitted the storyline so perfectly that it never felt out of place or unnatural. As the story progressed, I decided that I loved it, and then the level at which I loved it grew and grew.

Mia (Emma Stone) and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) meet coincidentally multiple times and form a friendship through their common ambition to achieve their dreams. Mia is an aspiring actress who frequently attends auditions whenever she can, although has never been offered a part. Sebastian dreams of opening his own Jazz Club, however sees few options so makes a living playing music even though it is not the style he so loves.

‘La La Land’ could be categorised as a Musical or a Romance however it is so much more than either of those. It doesn’t particularly fit any category except its own. Despite the many songs, it is not in any way a typical musical, because the way in which the characters ‘burst’ into song is not cheesy but instead eloquent and stunning. It fits so well with the theme of the story and so I couldn’t help but love it.

The ending, however, is the most perfect bit of the whole film. One of my friends said that when she went to see it, she didn't like the ending but to me, it was so phenomenally powerful. Now, I’m a very ‘over-emotional’ person, and I cry at a lot of different films. But I didn’t cry at this film. I cried at the end, after having had to take a couple of minutes to take everything in. The credits were already rolling and then the tears came and wouldn’t stop for a few more minutes. The what-could-have-been scene made me feel so overwhelmed with an entirely new emotion that I’ve never felt before. The scene was both utterly heart-breaking yet utterly gorgeous. When Mia imagines what her life could have been, I found myself hoping that it did in fact turn out to be the reality, but then I realised that the whole moral was that it didn’t need to have happened. The two characters had put so much love into their relationship with each other and their relationship with their dreams, that it did not matter that they didn’t end up together. What did matter was how much they learnt and grew from each other in a way that they wouldn’t have been able to do individually. The look that they give each other in the final seconds of the film was so meaningful; it was full of so much thanks and love for the fact that without each other, neither of them would have been able to achieve their dreams. The romantic love between them of course was important, but the love in that final look felt so much deeper and more loving than their romantic relationship which felt so much more special.

The music in this film is undeniably exquisite. Jazz may not be to everybody’s taste, and I didn’t think it was to mine, but every second of the film’s musicality is stunning. I have been listening to the soundtrack all weekend and have happily endured having multiple of the songs ‘stuck’ in my head. The epilogue piece is my favourite as it’s a compilation of a variety of the pieces of music from throughout the film. City of Stars is such a sleek and effortlessly cool song and so wonderful to listen to, along with every single one of the pieces from the soundtrack.

Every element of the film was wonderful; the story, the way it was told, the music, the characters, the love, happiness and the morals. It deserves to break records at the Oscars this year, and judging by its performance at awards ceremonies and the critical reception it’s already received, it’s looking likely to do so.

This film is a masterpiece.

Books To Read This Autumn

I've read 10 books throughout the summer which is unheard of for me as I'm such a slow reader usually! It's fair to say that I've rediscovered my love for reading and have become a proper book worm. I definitely do not want to have to put reading aside now that I'm back at college, so I'm going to tell you about the books I'm going to be sure to read this Autumn:

On the Other Side by Carrie Hope Fletcher

My friend bought this for me a a birthday present but I haven't had the chance to read it yet! Before meeting my friend, I'd never watched Carrie as a YouTuber, but I now really love her channel. The cover of this book is so beautiful and the story sounds great. The blurb is very vague, which always intrigues me, but I know it's a love story, and so I reckon I'll love it!

Always with Love by Giovanna Fletcher
Sticking with the Fletcher family, this is also an 'I-can't-wait-to-read-it' book. I read Billy and Me as part of the Zoella Book Club, and after initially taking a while to settle into the story, I genuinely adored it. The characters were so well written and I found it so easy to like them all, so when I finished the book, I knew I had to find out more in the second book!

You Know Me Well by Nina LaCour and David Levithan
I was in Waterstones a while ago, picking up random books and exploring different blurbs to find interesting books. And this book definitely jumped out to me as one I really wanted to read. It's about two characters; Kate who is 'running away from a chance of meeting the girl she has loved from afar' and Mark, who is 'in love with his best friend, Ryan', so the book clearly has representation of the LGBTQ+ community. I've never read a love story from an LGBTQ+ perspective - I guess because there aren't many out there, or at least not as many publicized as much. I think it's so important to see this representation, and I'm hugely excited to read about this story.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child; Parts One and Two by J.K. Rowling, John Tiffany and Jack Thorne
Of course this is a book I'm going to be reading this Autumn. I was lucky enough to see the play in August (don't worry; no spoilers ahead) and couldn't have fallen in love with the story more. I've started to read the script already, and find that I'm able to picture the scenes so well, which I love and am so hugely grateful for. I'm not going to be reading it all in one go, but rather savouring it and reading it gradually so it lasts for longer. But anyway, it's an incredible story :)

What books are you going to read this Autumn?

13 Things I Want To Do Before The End Of Year 13

As I've said in the title, I'm in year 13. If there is anyone reading who isn't from the UK (if there is, that's soo cool! please say hi!) then year 13 is for 17-18 year olds and is the final year before university. I did 4 AS Levels last year and I, like most other students, have dropped one (Psychology) and then taking 3 on to A Level. The subjects I'm taking are Maths, Business and Economics.

So here are 13 things I want to do before I reach the end of year 13!

1. Get decent predicted grades.
My AS results from last year count for our predicted grades which help us get into university. I was really pleased with my grades so I'm hoping I'll get good enough predicted ones!

2. Continue reading for leisure.
I'm surrounded by lots of people who are reading books for their subjects or to help improve their University personal statements. But as I want to do either Maths or Finance, reading books for my subjects aren't really as beneficial. So I want to continue reading for my own pleasure as I have honestly been so happy this summer reading lots of books and I do not want that to stop.

3. Step out of my comfort zone.
Literally for just the smallest of things. I'm quite very introverted and shy, but I'd love for me to be able to have overcome that, even just the slightest bit.

4. Buy my own copies of the Harry Potter series.
Don't think I haven't read them - of course I have! I love Harry Potter, seriously love it, but the copies we have are our family copies and I really want to have copies that are mine so I can have them on my own shelf and take them with me if I go to Uni.

5. Aim for an A* in maths.
Maths has always been my favourite subject. I know so many people absolutely hate maths and I find that so strange because I just love it! I guess it's just a bit like Marmite; you either love it or you hate it - and I love it! It's always been my best subject and some of my proudest achievements are my GCSE and AS Maths results. I'm definitely not one of those people who would be angry and accusing for getting "only" 90% in an exam, and so I'll be proud of whatever result I do get this year, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't hoping for an A* in maths. I just get so much happiness out of that subject and knowing that I potentially am capable of achieving it makes me want to get it even more!

6. Get fitter.
Notice that I've said get fitter instead of get fit. There's a difference, and getting fitter will be much easier than getting fit - so I'll try that one!

7. Go to my first concert.
I mentioned in a previous post that I had bought tickets along with a few friends to see Selena Gomez which would have been my first concert! But unfortunately, she cancelled her tour due to illness and her wanting to take time off. I totally support her decision, but it's just sad because I know she would have been incredible live. I would love to be able to go to my first concert this year - even if it's not to see Selena :(

8. Save money.
If I do end up going to Uni next September, then I'm going to need to save up. Because I've seen those living costs and they're not cheap...!

9. Value kindness.
I'd like to think I'm a kind person, but I want to be kinder. After talking to my friend recently I realised that kindness is such an underrated quality but such an invaluable trait to have. I want to have this quality.

10. Develop my Feminist views.
I did a college research project on Feminism and since, I have developed my knowledge and opinions of gender equality in a way which I'm very proud of. I want to continue learning about this vital topic so that I know more about the world around me.

11. Go and see Fantastic Beasts.
This won't be hard because friends and I have already decided to go and see it together when it comes out. Although I don't have my tickets yet, I still have a couple of months to get them, and as it's a film, I'm sure tickets will be much easier to get hold of than for The Cursed Child - or at least I'm hoping so!

12. Buy a new bike.
This won't do any favours for the saving money thing, but I don't actually have a bike at the moment and after watching the Olympics and seeing every one of Team GB's cyclists win a medal - many of them gold - really inspired me to get cycling. Laura Trott was just incredible and she's still so young, and I genuinely think in years to come she will be the most decorated British Olympian in history.

13. Take lots and lots of photos.
This is my final year of compulsory education and after that many of my friends and I are hoping to go to University meaning we won't see each other as often. I want to take loads of photos to remember the great times we'll have.

And there are 13 things I want to do before the end of year 13.

What things do you want to do this year?

Photography Post #3 | Rome

If you've read my recent posts, you'll know that I went on holiday to Italy for 2 and a half weeks and I was lucky enough to spend a few days in Rome! I'd never been before, but my mum has and it's her favourite city in the world so I knew that I would love being there. And I did. The intense heat combined with loads of walking was quite difficult but I loved it anyway and had a great time!

I thought I'd show some of the pictures that I took there, so I hope you like them!
